The Long March and Shanghai Massacre
The Shanghai massacre was the attempted suppression of the communists by Chiang Kai-Shek where he ordered mass killings in Shanghai. The Long March was when the Chinese Communist Party was being pursued by the Nationalists during the Chinese civil war. The nationalists had found out the main base of operations for the opposing communist party. Chiang Kai-Shek was the leader of the Nationalists at this time and Mao Zedong was the Leader of the Communists at this time.They forced them out of their base in Jiang Xi and into northern China. The communists began the journey with 100,000 people and ended up with only 8,000. This was a big hit to the Communists plans but this did not stop them forever.
Nationalists
Is the political party founded by Sun Yat-sen in 1911 and dominant in China from 1928 until 1949 under the leadership of Chiang Kai-Shek. Since then it has been the official ruling party of Taiwan.

Chiang Kai-Shek
He lived from 1887 until 1975. He was a Chinese military and political figure who led the Nationalists against rising Communist forces and was driven from the mainland into Taiwan (1949), where he served as president of until his death in 1975

Sun Yat-sen
Lived from 1866 until1925. He was a Chinese politician who served as a provisional president of the republic after the fall of Manchu (1911-1912) and later led the opposition to Yu ur Shigai.

Mao Zedong
Lived from 1893 until 1976 and was the Chinese Communist leader and theorist. He was also one of the founders of the Chinese Communist Party (1921), he led the Long March and proclaimed the People's Republic of China in 1949.

The long March
Was a journey of about 10,000 kilometers in 1934 and 1935 undertaken by about 100,000 Chinese communists when they were forced out of their base in Jiang-Xi. Only 8,000 survived which weakened the communist party greatly. Along the way though they fought back using guerrilla tactics.

Guerrilla Warfare
Is the use of surprise raids and sabotages by small mobile groups of irregular forces operating in enemy territory. This was used by the communists during the Long March to attempt to slow and weaken the nationalists.

Shanghai Massacre
Was the suppression of the communist party in China by Chiang Kai-Shek and the Nationalist party. Communists lost 300-400 people they know to be murdered but another 5,000 went missing during this time.
